Seven Things You Need to Know About RV Insurance

Writer • Jun 18, 2021

You might be familiar with insurance policies like home and auto, but what about RV insurance? Depending on how you use your RV, it might blur the lines between a domicile and an automobile.

When shopping for RV insurance in Corydon, IN, the best advice is to be open and honest with the insurance agent you’re speaking with. This will make the process run much smoother and make both of your lives easier. If you’re in the 47112 area and you’re curious about RV insurance, here are some things to know:

  • How much time you spend in your RV affects your policy: More time spent in your RV means that there’s more liability for you and the insurer. If you only use your RV on occasion, then you are considered part-time and fall into one policy category. If you use your RV between 150 and 365 nights a year, however, you’re considered full-time and will need a more robust policy.
  • If your state requires auto insurance, your RV needs to be insured: Because an RV can be driven like a car, most states will require you to at least have general liability insurance. If your RV isn’t drivable on its own, then you probably don’t technically need insurance, but having it anyway certainly wouldn’t hurt.
  • Personal property is covered under your home insurance policy, with some exceptions: If you have a home besides your RV, then any personal property inside the RV is covered by your home insurance policy. If your RV is your sole living space, though, you’ll want to talk to your insurance agent so you can craft a policy that protects your personal belongings.
  • The age of your RV affects your insurance payout if it’s totaled: If you total your RV and it is up to 18 months old, you can get replacement value coverage. If it’s over five years old, you can get actual cash value coverage (which factors in depreciation), and if it’s over 10 years old, you’re eligible for agreed-upon value coverage, which you can work out with your insurance company.
  • If you’re converting a school bus, you might not be eligible for coverage: Many insurance companies won’t provide insurance for converted school buses because they are large, weighty vehicles that can cause significant damage in an accident. Silver Eagle and Prevost buses are exceptions to this rule.
  • The price of your insurance depends on your class of RV: A Class A RV (which is the most expensive to insure) could run you about $2,000 per year to insure. A Class B RV would cost about $1,000 to $2,000 per year. Other factors can affect your price, too.
  • You may want collision insurance on your car if you’re towing it behind your RV: In an accident, it’s possible that your RV’s insurance won’t cover damage to your car if you’re towing it behind your RV. For this reason, you should speak with an insurance agent about maintaining collision insurance on your car.
